Badge Charms

New Players: This is something simple anyone can do.

There are rings at the bottom of each badge. You can use these to attach up to three Badge Charms.

Every session one or more Badge Charms will be available that are awarded for completing a task created by the player whose character is offering the Charm. The overview for the session will explain who is offering Charms. Sometimes it will also tell you what you need to do to earn one but often you will need to approach the character offering them and ask.

Completing a Task should take 10-20 minutes. These are meant to be fun little “side quests”.

Example: Marus is looking for help deciphering an ancient tome. Anyone who completes the translation of a page will receive a Scroll Charm.

Only hang Charms you have earned during the current session from your badge. We recommend displaying the rest from a tankard or something. You may gather quite a collection over time.

At the end of the session, when you turn in your badge, you may remove and keep any charms you earned once the Archivist has made a note of what you earned. You can't earn more than three a session.

You earn 2xp for the first charm and 1xp for a second and third, for a maximum of 4 extra experience per session.

Badge Charm Tasks are entirely player driven. If you have an idea for an offering, reach out to the staff by emailing gatewaylarp@gmail.com with the title "Badge Charm Idea". Explain the task you would like to present and what your Charm would look like.

You will need to have materials to provide at least 12 Charms. You can have more on hand if you like, but when you run out of Charms no one can earn one. Make sure you have a way to attach the Charms to the badge. Clips, string, ribbon - you can be creative but make sure the Charms will be secure.

There are few limits to the Badge Charm tasks. Participate in arena practice or an eating contest. What about a cooking contest? Help make banners to decorate the Ram's Head. Contribute to a book of legends. Whatever you choose should take less than a half hour and if materials are required, you need to provide them.

Tasks that involve making something up such as “Tell me a legend your character heard as a child” and “Write (or draw) something in my journal” tasks are legit and fun but it’s best not to have more than 1 of these per session. Tasks that involve doing things are best.

Tasks that carry a penalty or even the possibility of a penalty have proven to be a bad idea, as are tasks where you can fail and get nothing. Best practice is to create fun diversions that allow adventurers to exchange time and effort for xp and maybe interaction with an element of the lore.
