Motivations

We don’t use alignments in Gateway but it can be helpful to have something like that to help guide your roleplaying. We use Motivations instead.

Choose a Primary and Secondary Motivation. You don’t have to have these right away, but having these can help you establish your character’s personality.

Those marked with an asterisk can be problematic - it is suggested that heroic Adventurers only take these as Secondary Motivations.

Ally: help your companions pursue their goals

Champion: defend the defenseless

Collector: acquire something (often magical items) *

Build: establish something (work with staff to determine what)

Explore: seek out the unknown

Faithful: follow the tenets of your faith

Fortune: build personal wealth *

Influence: you are driven to achieve social or political power *

Glory: make a name for yourself *

Justice: seek justice regardless of the law

Lead: no matter what you do, you like to call the shots *

Mastery: be the best you can be at what you do

Power: you are driven to achieve personal power *

Revenge: get even for what you believe to have been a wrong *

Scrapper: you love to fight and you love to win *

Seeker: looking for something (work with staff to determine what)

Storyteller: do things that will make great stories

Scholar: gather knowledge

Subject: strengthen the realm as best you can

Thrills: you are drawn to taking risks *
